I live in West Sussex where I grew up with the South Downs on one side and the English Channel on the other. This gave me an appreciation of panoramic views and atmospheric seascapes. My journey as an artist has taken me through various media, finding a love for clay and specializing in ceramics (during my Foundation Year at West Sussex College of Art and Design, and then Exeter for my Fine Art BA) where a simplification of imagery in my chosen subject of landscape was necessary due to my working methods with the media.
After achieving a BA (Hons) in Fine Art Ceramics, (back in the real world of initially having no kiln or workshop access) I began to develop my painting skills which resulted in a period of more complex landscapes which were in the traditional/realist genre. These provided a source of income alongside a necessary “day job” until the point where I could get back to ceramics. This line of work I have kept for my own private practice.
I started teaching painting and drawing in 2001 mostly in the traditional formats of watercolour, gouache, pastels, oils and acrylics. I teach all subjects including life studies. As a “demonstrating tutor”, I paint in every session and by necessity quickly. This has influenced the way I paint in my own practice changing from painstaking detail to quick “blocking in” of tone and selective application of detail.
As well as teaching 5 classes a week, I provide demonstrations, run workshops and critique work for art societies in person across the South of England.
I have exhibited as a member of the Adur Art Collective, participated in the Worthing Open Houses and shows in Brighton.
I can now offer “livestream” demonstrations, classes and workshops nationally and internationally. I regularly undertake commissions in diverse media and offer my paintings, ceramics, prints and art cards through my website.
Honoured to be President of the Downland Art Society based at Walberton near Arundel in West Sussex.
